PRESENT HORTICULTURAL CROP PRODUCTION AND FUTURE PROSPECTS IN THE NORTHERN REGION

Authors:   E.A. Ahmed, A.H. Nourai, G.H. Mohamed Ali, H.M.A. Dinnar
Abstract:
The Northern Region consists of Northern and Nile Provinces. It occupies the north western part of the Sudan. It lies between latitudes 20 °W and 16 °W. Generally it is considered as an extended desert and its climate is characterized by the relatively cool and long winters. The average annual rainfall varies from nil in the north to 10" in the south, with poor and drought tolerant vegetation. Natural resources are tremendous. Water resources depend on River Nile, underground water and wadi seasonal flow. The total cultivated area is about 222,600 hectares and the potential area suitable for agricultural investments is about 420,000 hectares.

The population is estimated to be 1,395,000 persons, 80 % of whom are engaged in agriculture. Crops cultivated include cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits, spices and fodders. Agricultural production in the Northern Region is encountered by numerous problems e.g. desert encroachment, soil erosion, lack of agricultural inputs, shortage of fuel, lack of spare parts, limited funds for research and extension. Efforts are, however, exerted towards alleviating these problems so as to promote agricultural production.
