Abstract:
A new sudden outbreak of a leaf blight on cassava (Manihot esculenta Crans) and attributed to Xanthomonas manihotis is reported.
Early symptoms include water soaked angular spots on leaves of mature plants followed by exudation of thick and sticky yellow liquid from most of these angular spots but only on the lower leaf surface.
This sticky substance often solidified to form tiny pellets along the veins of such leaves.
In some leaves bearing these spots, however, no pellets were formed.
As time progressed the angular spots turned from light green to brown, greatly enlarged and coalsced forming necrotic areas that covered either one or more lobes or entire leaves lamina typical of blight symptoms.
Isolation from such leaves and infected plant tops confirmed the presence of Xanthomonas manihotis the causal agent of Cassava Bacterial Blight (CBB).
