ISHS Acta Horticulturae 143: VIII African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

INSECT PESTS OF FRUIT CROPS AND THEIR CONTROL IN THE SUDAN

Author:   S. Siddig
Abstract:
Insect pests of fruit crops were surveyed several times at different parts of the Sudan. These surveys indicated that scale insects, mites, termites, fruit flies, leaf miners and mealy bugs are major pests inflicting considerable damage to fruit trees. However, field trials on the control of major pests of date palm and citrus showed promising results and a number of pesticides were recommended.

Inspite of this, no serious attempt has been started in the Sudan to combat these major pests probably because mounted motor sprayers needed to spray fruit trees are very expensive. Hence suggestions were included in this paper to overcome this handicap mainly by organizing fruit growers in cooperative or unions so that spraying equipment could easily be secured.
