ISHS Acta Horticulturae 143: VIII African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

A SURVEY OF INSECT PESTS, DISEASES AND WEEDS ON VEGETABLE CROPS IN KHARTOUM PROVINCE

Authors:   E. Guddoura, H. Burgstaller
Abstract:
A survey of insects, weeds and diseases attacking vegetable crops was made on several areas under vegetable crops. The survey revealed the occurence of many insect species of economic importance as well as several weeds. As for diseases only powdery mildews on cucurbits and bacterial wilt on green pepper were investigated. However, crops surveyed included okra, tomato, eggplant, onion, cucurbits, green beans, green pepper, potato, sweet potato, jew's mallow, purslane and salads (radish, lettuce, beet root and cabbage). The survey concentrated on the insect species of major importance, or those that cause economic damage to the crop. Although the survey showed many weed species occuring on vegetable plantations, few of the major species were mentioned, as detailed results will be submitted else where in the symposium. Difficulties in the identification of plant diseases, specially the viruses, limited the informations. Field observations showed clearly that weeds are now becoming a serious problem and limiting considerably the production of vegetables. It is time to give more attention to the control of weeds using other methods and means than manual labour that became costy and rare to find.
