INFLUENCE OF PLANT POPULATION PRESSURE ON THE RESPONSE OF TOMATO TO NITROGEN FERTILIZATION

Author:   A. A. Taha
Abstract:
Although vegetative growth of the tomato plant clearly indicates the response of the plant to nitrogen fertilization, this is not evident in the final yield of tomato in most of the cases at many locations in the Sudan. Trials were conducted at Shambat Research Station Farm in 1979–1982 to evaluate the effect of plant population pressure on the response of tomato to nitrogen fertilization. High nitrogen rate coupled with lower plant population delayed fruit set, thus reducing early yield. High plant population resulted in high yield. Although nitrogen alone up to 88 kg N/ha had no significant effect on yield of tomato, the interaction between plant population and nitrogen fertilization was significant.
