THE PERFORMANCE OF MANGOES IN THE SUDAN

Authors:   M. Mardi, S. Awad
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1984.143.24
Abstract:
Available information show that mango cultivars reacted differently according to climate namely temperature and rainfall. Growth as determined by height and girth generally depends on rootstock/scion combination, but in this study temperature and soil were the considered factors because of lack of information about the former. The main flowering season of mangoes in the Sudan extends from October to March. Fruiting season extends for eleven months a year according to the cultivars grown and prevailing environmental conditions.

According to the season of fruit maturity mangoes could be classified into three distinct types: a) early (Baladi), b) intermediate (Alphonse, Zibdah), c) late (Totapari, Abusamaka). In wet warm areas like Sennar and Nuba Mountains two fruiting seasons exist for the Baladi and Totapari. However, most of the cultivars are characterized by one fruiting season.
