Abstract:
The paper summarizes work that was carried out to introduce broad beans to the central clay plains of the Sudan.
Experiments were conducted in the Gezira Research Station at Wad Medani and Sennar Research Station at Sennar.
Twelve broad bean cultivars were evaluated in both centres.
Cultivars varied in their responses to the different locations; Baladi, Selaim and Rebayas 40 and 34 being most suited for Medani and Hudeiba white and black strains, BF 2/2 and Giza-2 for Sennar.
Medani area is more suited for broad bean production than Sennar area.
The first of November was found to be the optimum planting time in the Gezira area.
Processing quality studies showed that most of the cultivars are suitable for cooking and canning.
Future work should concentrate on introducing cultivars that are adapted to very short winters and to aspects of flower shedding and fruit set and development.
