Abstract:
The eggplant, as a warm season vegetable crop, is well adapted to almost all parts of the Sudan, where irrigation water is available for its long growing season.
The local types with oval or bell-shape, light purple to black coloured fruits had been introduced most probably from Egypt.
Within the last twenty years, many cultivars were introduced, tested, evaluated and compared to the local types.
The highest yields of 44.4 – 117.2 tons/ha were recorded at Shendi, where "Black Beauty" was leading.
At Hudeiba, maximum yields of 43.5 and 39.8 tons/ha were recorded by "Fort Myer's Market" and "Florida Market". At the Gezira, "Black Beauty" (33.4 tons/ha) was the best, while at Sennar, yields of 50.0 – 57.7 tons/ha were obtained by "Spherical" (57.7), "Wizzo" (51.5) and "Black Beauty" (50.0). The lowest yields of 8.6 – 21.2 tons/ha were obtained at Shambat, while at Jebel Marra the yield range was 27.4 – 32.0 tons/ha despite the heavy infestation by insect pests and root knot nematodes.
