Abstract:
Peas is establishing grounds as an important crop for both fresh market and canning in Sudan.
Dry peas are used for canning to close the production gap when the perishable seasonal crops are over.
The work done at Gezira, Shambat and Hudeiba Research Stations and at Karima Canning Factory was mainly variety, plant population and sowing date trials.
Although early maturing varieties were not the best yielders, yet they were prefered to the late but high yielding varieties because they escape the powdery mildew disease.
The best spacing was found to be 5 cm and 70 cm between plants and ridges respectively.
The period from the third week of October to the second week of November was found to be the best sowing date in central and northern Sudan.
The most important diseases of peas are powdery mildew and wilt disease complex.
Breeding as well as chemical control methods gave encouraging results.
