Abstract:
Research on evaluation of sweet pepper cultivars in the Sudan started in the late sixties.
Though sweet pepper consumption in the Sudan is rather small, it ranks high as an exportable vegetable of huge potential.
A total of eleven cultivars were evaluated for yield potential in three northern and two central locations in the Sudan.
Most cultivars performed well in the northern locations, Shendi and Hudeiba, with total yield of fresh fruits range of 24.76 tons/ha to 46.41 tons/ha.
The total yields of fresh fruits at the central locations of Wad Medani and Sennar were rather low ranging from 1.52 tons/ha to 15.6 tons/ha.
The data suggest that any production effort of sweet pepper should be limited to the northern locations.
Production at the central locations could be on a smaller scale perhaps to satisfy the local demand.
California Wonder, Yolo Wonder, Florida Giant and Keystone Resistant Giant were the promising cultivars.
