Abstract:
Hot pepper land cultivars, covering a wide range of morphological variation were collected from different regions of the country.
They were compared in variety trials, together with some introduced cultivars for general evaluation.
Variability within these land cultivars called for a project of purification and consequent characterization of the resulting lines.
Genetic variation was found in different characters including growth and fruiting habits of the plant as well as fruit attributes such as conformation, size, number of locules, colour, flesh thickness and pungency.
From an original 30 land cultivars the number of prospective lines exceeded 100. The planting of the lines close together in variety trials was an important factor in additional genetic diversity due to outcrossing.
With proper isolation measures, the purification process will render a great number of lines that can be evaluated for chemical characterization.
