ISHS Acta Horticulturae 141: II International Symposium on Carnation Culture

CARNATION BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE TO FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F. SP. DIANTHI PRACTICAL ACHIEVEMENT OF RESISTANT CULTIVARS

Author:   Mr. Henri Blanc
Abstract:
When the soil of a Grower is too contaminated by Fusarium Oxysporum, the most interesting way of prusuing the carnation culture in the same nurseries is to plant resistant varieties and to take over a way of growing which does not favour the parasite.

Nevertheless despite the fact that these varieties must present a sufficient level of resistance ("mediamente sensibile" according to Garibaldi), they must present agronomic caracteristics that are expected of commercial carnations, in particular the absence of splits and a good winter productivity.

It is precisely the elaboration of the association: resistance plus agronomic qualities which we try to achieve through the 2 possible methods: hybridization and mutant research that we are going to set out beneath.
