ISHS Acta Horticulturae 141: II International Symposium on Carnation Culture

POSTHARVEST HANDLING OF CARNATIONS

Authors:   M. S. Reid, Anton M. Kofranek, Seward T. Besemer
Abstract:
Widespread adoption of the use of silver thiosulfate (STS) as a pretreatment for carnations in recent years has revolutionized the handling of this cut flower crop. Carnations, which previously lasted no more than five to ten days in the vase, now last fifteen to thirty days.

Our initial descriptions of how to make and use STS need updating in the light of recent research findings. We describe here the "state of the art" in handling carnations based on our research and on commercial experience in California.
