ISHS Acta Horticulturae 141: II International Symposium on Carnation Culture

PREFACE

Authors:   Seward T. Besemer, Anton M. Kofranek
Abstract:
We wish to thank the more than 170 persons who attended this Second International Symposium on Carnation Culture in San Diego, California in February 1983. The Attendance was exceptionally large since carnation growers from overseas and the United States were also invited to participate for the entire symposium or just on Friday, February 18, which was designated "Growers' Day". On that day, sessions were organized that would be of special interest to commercial growers. Four invited speakers gave talks concerning the present outlook and the future trends in Colombia, Europe, Israel and the United States. These talks appear at the end of this volume, all entitled "The Present Outlook on Future Trends".

The scientific sessions were categorized into physiology (lighting and nutrition), breeding, propagation, postharvest physiology and diseases and their controls. All sessions were well attended. The attendees were enthusiastic, and asked many questions of the speakers. After these sessions were completed, there were two discussions held in the evening. One session dealt with physiology and the other on diseases and breeding for disease resistance. The session on physiology was recorded and appears just before "The Present Outlook and Future Trends" papers.
