PRE-SELECTION OF SEEDLINGS FOR SPUR TYPE APPLES

Authors:   G.H. Zhang, G.H. Wang, Q.Y. Zhang, W.Q. Zhang, X.Zh. Tang
Abstract:
Two types of stem, 'tower' and 'spindle' were noted in 1-year-old seedlings derived from hybridization of apple cvs. Rich Beauty, Yun Green, Golden and Red Delicious.'Tower' type is characterized by tapering from the base end to the top and 'spindle' type by swelling in the mid-portion of the stem. 1-year-old seedling were grouped into five categories according their height. The diameter of theswelling portion in the five categories of the spindle type seedlings were significantly greater(p=0.01) than the diameter of the corresponding portion of the tower type seedlings. A totle number of 73 spindle type seedlings were selected, among which 14 trees were 7-year-old and have been proved to be spur type, others were 3–4-year-old and significantly different from tower type in several parameters with obvious spur type characteristics. Compared to the tower type, one more band presented in the zymogram of peroxidase isozyme extracted from the bast of 2-year-old spindle type seedlings. So the swelling in the mid-portion of the stems is a characteristic of the spur type in 1-year-old seedings and can be used as an indicator for pre-selection of spur type apples. The ninth band of peroxidase isozyme in zymogram present in spindle type seedlings and lack in tower type seedlings. So it can be used as an indicator of pre-selection for spur type apples, too.
