INHERITANCE AND GENETIC VARIATION OF SPURRED GROWTH HABIT IN APPLES

Author:   J. Blazek
Abstract:
An incomplete diallel consisting of 41 crosses of 11 cultivars was studied in 2 000 seedlings. In addition, more than 1 800 seedlings of 22 progenies of different cultivars were observed. In the majority of progenies the share of spurred seedlings was relatively high (the cross means were 35. 5 % and 22. 4 % respectively). However, the share of spurred seedlings with compact growth was distinctly lower (13. 7 and 3. 4 % resp.). Exceptional was only the progeny of 'Starkspur Golden Delicious' x 'Starkrimson Delicious' where 60 % of seedlings showed this growth habit. The vigour of compact and spurred seedlings showed a normal distribution from dwarf to vigorous types. Most of them had a more upright growth of lateral branches but in some progenies spreading crowns prevailed. Only a very small portion of spurred seedlings seems to be distinctly more valuable for a practical use.
