AUTOCHTHONOUS OLIVE CULTIVARS IN ANDALUSIA

Authors:   L. Rallo, D. Barranco
Abstract:
Exploration of 83 local districtis belonging to the 47 olive districts of Andalusia allowed selection of 511 trees including 197 local varietal denominations. Systematic pomological descriptions of samples from shoots, leaves, inflorescences, fruits and pits allowed varietal identification and classification of synonymous and erroneous denominations. Economic importance and diffusion of cultivars led to the establishment of: a) 10 main cultivars. b) 12 secondary cultivars. c) 21 largely diffused but economically unimportant cultivars. d) 53 local cultivars. e) 60 local and rare varieties. Diffusion areas are presented and agronomic and technological characteristics of the main cultivars are tabulated.

The results support the autochthonous origin of cultivars.

One hundred and fifty six cultivars were introduced in the FAO-INIA world's collection at Córdoba. A list of these cultivars is available on request.
