CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF SMALL FRUIT BREEDING

Abstract:
The main task for the black currant breeding was to obtain new cultivars having long and full clusters and a high degree of self-sterility. The breeding aim of red and white currant is to obtain highly yielding cultivars, easily propagated by woody cuttings and having long and full clusters. Three new white currant cultivars named Primus, Blanka and Viktória were approved. The new breeding of gooseberries have has the aim to obtain thornless cultivars resistant towards diseases caused by fungi. The very intensive attention is given to the breeding of new strawberries cultivars. In the last years 6 new Czechoslovak strawberry cultivars were approved : Maria, Tamara, Anita, Dagmar, Rena, Roxana. In 1982 a new cultivar of raspberries under the name Granát was approved. Appart of classical breeding methods, the possibilities of using the acute doses of ionizing radiation, for induction of somatic mutations was tested in strawberries and the breeding of polyploid form has been used at dogwood. From the population of Rosa villosa a new cultivar was selected under the name Karpatia. According to the requirements of the processing industry the plantations of elder were established and started to select ecotypes.
