Abstract:
Among the progenies of seedlings obtained by open and cross-pollination of standard cultivars, several semi-dwarf selections with the genotypes bu1 bu2 (Lammerts, 1945) recessive, and n (Monet, Salesses, 1975), partially dominant, have been identified.
The tree size of these selections is 30–50% smaller compared to standard cultivars.
The selections, used in the breeding program to breed semi-dwarf new varieties suitable for high density planting, are in order of ripening: IF 7010200 (J.H.Hale x Bonanza), IF 6910019 (Sentinel o.p.), IF 6910167 (Southland x Fairtime), IF 6910138 (Redhaven o.p.), IF 7310828 (F2 J.H.Hale x Bonanza), IF 6910242 (Southland x Summerset). The time of ripening varies from 10 days before to 43 days after Redhaven.
The following characters have been controlled: tree size, internode length and diameter of one year old twigs, leaf area, chlorophyll content, cell wall thickness, stomata number, together with the agronomical records.
