CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME DWARFING CHERRY HYBRID ROOTSTOCKS

Author:   W. Gruppe
Abstract:
In preliminary rootstock trials we selected 13 rootstock candidates of interspecific hybrids of P. avium, P. cerasus, P. fruticosa and P. canescens which induce a range of size-control, precocity and high productivity in cv. 'Hedelfinger' until 6/8 years after planting/grafting. Data are given for canopy size, trunk cross-sectional area and performance of union, precocity, productivity, fruit size and quality, suckering, anchorage, mineral status of trees and rootstocks, relative frost susceptibility and reaction to waterlogging tests. According to induced vigour and senescence of spurs on older branches, trees need pruning. All clones are readily propagated by greenwood cuttings under mist. Rootstock candidates have been released for variety/rootstock trials under different ecological conditions.
