ISHS Acta Horticulturae 14: Symposium on Flower Regulation in Florist Crops

SOME FACTORS AFFECTING THE RESULT OF EARLY FORCING OF IRIS x HOLLANDICA 'WEDGWOOD'

Authors:   I. Walla, T. Kristoffersen
Abstract:
Early forcing of Iris 'Wedgwood' often fails to give a satisfactory result. The bulbs may produce only leaves and no visible flowers at all ("blind bulbs") or the flower buds may wilt before they reach anthesis (aborted flowers). In some instances the leaves grow too tall in relation to the flower stem thus giving rise to a product of low market value.

Since bulbs prepared for early flowering are rather costly no great loss of flowers can be tolerated by the growers. On the other hand, there is a great demand for high quality Iris flowers in the winter months.

A study of the problems associated with early flowering of Iris F'Wedgwood' was therefore initiated on the initiative of interested growers. Preliminary results obtained will be presented in this paper.
