ISHS Acta Horticulturae 14: Symposium on Flower Regulation in Florist Crops

THE EFFECT OF STORAGE TEMPERATURES, SHORT DAY TREATMENT, AND B-NINE ON THE FLOWERING OF THIRTEEN CULTIVARS OF GREENHOUSE AZALEAS

Author:   S. Jorgensen
Abstract:
The cultivars reacted differently to precooling, short day treatment and B-Nine. All cultivars flowered earlier when precooled at 10°C with light, compared to 3°C with no light. There was more leafdrop when precooled at 10°C than at 3°C. Marginal leafburn was more of a problem at the 3°C precooling temperature. Most cultivars flowered earlier and uniformly after short day treatment alone. The use of B-Nine alone or in combination with short day treatment, gave delayed and less uniform flowering than short day treatment alone. Spraying with B-Nine reduced marginal leafburn during precooling.
