ISHS Acta Horticulturae 14: Symposium on Flower Regulation in Florist Crops

PREFACE

Author:   E. Strømme
Abstract:
In 1965 a highly successful symposium on Vegetable growing under glass was held at The Hague. It was arranged by the Commission for Protected Cultivation in cooperation with the Section for Vegetables.

It was felt that a similar symposium should be arranged with emphasis on flower growing under glass. The idea was presented at a joint meeting of the Section for Ornamental Plants and the above mentioned commission during the International Horticultural Congress in Maryland in 1966 and my invitation to arrange such a symposium at the Agricultural College of Norway in 1968 was accepted. The plans were drawn up by my colleague, Dr. Trygve Kristoffersen, who is a member of the commission, and myself, who is a member of the section.

We found that it would be necessary to narrow the field of discussion somewhat in relation to the symposium held at The Hague and at the end of 1967 we announced a symposium on Floriculture in which the following topics were to be discussed:

  1. Physiology of flowering,
  2. Chemical and environmental control of growth and development of florist crops,
  3. "Timing" of florist crops.

Dr. W. W. Schwabe, Dr. Daphne Vince (both U.K.) and Dr. W. Rünger (W. Germany) kindly accepted our invitation to give lectures covering certain aspects of flowering as affected by daylength and temperature. In addition 25 research papers were presented.

54 persons from 16 countries attended the symposium. It was a great pleasure for us to receive so many Floriculture specialists from neighbouring and faraway countries and we want to thank them all for making the symposium a success.
