Abstract:
The investigation was carried out with three sour cherry varieties: Schattenmorelle, Fanal, and Köröser.
Sour cherry flowers are pollinated with great amount of pollen.
The following regions of inhibited growth of pollen tubes were observed: on the stigma, at the basis of the style, and near the ovula.
Fertilization occurred in about 40% of flowers only.
The reason of inadequate fertilization is the atrophy of a part of ovulae already at the beginning of blossoming time.
It was found that a correlation occurred between the fertilization and fruit setting.
The first fruit drop is connected with disturbances in the morphogenetic process /atrophy of ovulae/. The second fruit drop results from the absence of fertilization, and the third one is conditioned by physiological processes.
