STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BERRY AND PEDICEL OF THE GRAPE VITIS VINIFERA L. |

| Abstract:
Berries with intact pedicels were sampled at weekly intervals from Vitis vinifera cv Grenache before and during the period of sugar accumulation and prepared for analysis of sugar and for anatomical observation. In the cells of the pericarp (skin and flesh) prominent vesicular activity developed at the beginning of the massive sugar accumulation (veraison). At the same time the walls of the skin cells thickened. Vesicular activity was not seen in cells of tissues which did not accumulate sugar, e.g. the pedicel. Membraneless globules, presumably of phenolic compounds, occurred in the vacuole of pericarp cells, especially against the tonoplast. After veraison these globules disappeared from flesh cells but were transformed to a thin layer in skin cells. Globules were also seen within the cells of the cortex and vascular region of the pedicel; their number and distribution changed with development as in skin cells. | |
