Abstract:
The versatile methods of organ culture in vitro enable a study into the requirements of fertilized tomato ovaries and their ovules to develop into fruits and seeds.
They turn out to require (a) factor(s) from the mother plant, possibly from the leaves, which is essential for cell division in pericarp, placenta, and ovules, and which cannot be replaced by cytokinin, auxin and/or gibberellin.
