Abstract:
Delayed pollination decreases fruit set.
Two sweet cherry cultivars were hand pollinated at intervalls of two to three days from the balloon stage to 10 days after anthesis.
Structure and histochemical changes in the stigma and style, pollen tube growth and senescence of ovules were investigated.
Germination of pollen grains and tube growth were not inhibited, even at a late pollination date.
From the results it can be concluded that ovule longevity appears to be the limiting factor for fruit set.
The effective pollination period (EPP) was 4 to 5 days.
