ISHS Acta Horticulturae 139: Fruit Set and Development, XXI IHC

FOREWORD

Authors:   Ir. H.H. van der Borg, G. Bünemann
Abstract:
The Programme Committee of the XXIst INTERNATIONAL HORTICULTURAL CONGRESS in Hamburg decided in consultation with the ISHS, to publish the papers of the most actual topics presented during this Congress, in 10 volumes in the series of Acta Horticulturae.

As was agreed that the publishing should be realised in the first half of 1983, a number of authors did not succeed in having their paper ready for submission in time, so unfortunately a few had to be left out.

The Programme Committee as well as the ISHS are very grateful for the work done by the convener of this Acta, number 139, titled "Fruit Set and Development".

Secretary General of ISHS

Ir.H.H. van der Borg

PREFACE

Fruit set and fruit development are the first steps toward producing high amounts of top quality fruit. Observations and findings in this field were assembled from papers and posters at the 21st International Horticultural Congress and are presented in this volume of Acta Horticulturae. Nearly all authors mailed their contribution without undue delay.

The papers are arranged in this book in a sequence which follows the steps pollen - pollination (including the role of bees) - sterility - environmental influences - fruit setting problems - fruitlet and successive fruit development - fruit metabolism and structure - abscission - growth regulator effects - specific fruits (Vaccinium) - specific reactions, here secondary blooming.

This booklet includes by no means all results available at present, but parts of its content may serve as a source of information for those who want to continue in this field and - hopefully - will form a basis for a special symposium in the future.

The editor thanks everyone for his careful cooperation.

G. Bünemann
