THE IMPORTANCE OF MINERAL NUTRITION AND CAC12 SPRAYING IN APPLE WATERCORE PREVENTION

Authors:   C. Nardin, A. Scienza
Abstract:
Trials were carried out in 1979 and 1980 at Vadena near Bolzano (Italy), on five years old "Gloster 79" apple palmettas, in order to ascertain physiological and nutritional causes involved in watercore susceptibility.

The "productivity index" (expressed as the ratio of annual fruit production and annual increase of trunk section) was found interesting to evaluate the behavior of fruits during storage as it was negatively correlated with the disorder.

In both years high Ca content of the fruits was followed by absence of the disorder.

CaC12 sprays, particularly the most frequent ones reduced the disorder.

Picking time resulted the most important factor. The susceptibility increased with ripening but very early picking gave poorer quality of fruits.
