ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE OPENING OF BUD-CUT FLOWERS

Authors:   Anton M. Kofranek, M. S. Reid
Abstract:
Environmental parameters for opening bud-cut flowers were examined using Chrysanthemum x morifolium 'Albatross' and Dianthus caryophyllus 'Scania' cut as tight buds. Although low temperatures retarded bud opening, temperatures in the 15 to 21 °C range gave optimal opening time and flower quality. Flowers did not open well in complete darkness, and although any length of illumination (at 1000 lux) was satisfactory, best quality and vase life was obtained with flowers opened in 16 h illumination.
