AN INVERTASE INHIBITOR AS AFFECTING WILTING OF CARNATION PETALS

Abstract:
It has been observed that activity of invertase in petals of carnation flowers rapidly decreases when flowers start to wilt. When the enzymatic extracts, made from fully opened and wilted petals, were incubated together the activity of invertase was considerably lower then the estimated sum of activities of enzymes from fresh and wilted petals. It is supposed that the decrease of this enzymes activity is the result of synthesis of an invertase inhibitor in wilting petals. When flowers were treated with ABA solution a decrease of the enzyme activity was observed, although the invertase activity has not been changed when ABA was added to the extract. Ethrel decreased longevity of flowers and accelerated the synthesis of an invertase inhibitor.
