INDUCTION OF FEATHERS BY GROWTH SUBSTANCES IN NURSERY APPLE TREES

Authors:   H. Ramirez, A. Rumayor, V. Martinez
Abstract:
A range of treatments to depress apical dominance and induce feathering in the apple cultivar Golden Delicious on MM 106 growing in a plastic tunnel nursery were compared. When trees reached a height of 60 or 75 cm of new growth, the following treatments were applied: Spraying, with PP528 (250 ppm), Dickegulac (0.05%), M&B 25–105 (0.05%), Promalin (500 ppm), shoot tipping and shoot tip left intact. A reduction in apical dominance was observed in all chemical treatments, effect wich resulted in the formation of feathers. The number of laterals was greater in plants treated with PP528 followed by Dickegulac, MyB 25–105 and Promalin. The treatment with M&B 25–105 gave feathers with an open angle. These results are discussed in terms of chemical control of shaping nursery apple trees.
