Abstract:
Decomposition products of carbaryl (1-naphthyl-n-methyl carbamate), 1-naphthol and methylamine, did not affect fruitlet abscission from Cox and Discovery apple trees.
Localised application of carbaryl to either fruitlets, pedicels or bourse shoot leaves of Discovery apple trees caused significant fruitlet abscission, whereas treatment of rosette leaves had no effect.
Carbaryl applied to fruitlets or bourse leaves was not translocated, whereas when applied to a pedicel it moved into the fruitlet.
Carbaryl applied to a fruitlet did not appear to enter the seeds.
Possible mode-of-action of carbaryl is discussed.
