EFFECTS OF GIBBERELLIN UPON FREESIA FLOWERING

Author:   M. Cocozza Talia
Abstract:
A research was done to test whether Freesia flowering can be advanced by treating the corms with gibberelliC acid (GA3) before planting. Different lenghts of treatment (1 to 4 weeks) at different temperatures (5°C, 12°C and 18+20°C) were compared on two varieties (Blue Heaven and Miranda). In both cultivars flowering was advanced more at 12°C. Concerning the duration of flowering, no sizable effects were induced by treating with gibberellin. With respect to qualitative characters (height of flower stem and spike lenght), all treatments with gibberellin induced moderate stem shortening which was more apparent with the longer duration of treatment. Also spike yield per unit surface area was slightly depressed by all treatments with gibberellin.
