Abstract:
Several herbicides and herbicide combinations were evaluated for weed control and crop phytotoxicity to transplanted eggplant and muskmelon.
Four seasons of trials on muskmelons at two locations has shown that commonly recommended muskmelon herbicides are safe on muskmelon when grown on plastic mulches.
Bensulide, in combination with naptalam, chloramben (methylester or salt), or dinoseb (amine salt), provided good weed control with no crop injury.
Other acceptable muskmelon treatments were with ethalfluralin and DCPA. Eggplants were not injured when planted in soil that was treated with napropamide, trifluralin, or DCPA. Crop yields were excellent and weed control was acceptable.
Alachlor, propachlor, metolachlor, oryzalin, and pendimethalin caused varying degrees of crop phytotoxicity.
In some cases, the eggplants grew out of this injury and produced acceptable yields.
