ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF QUALITY OF HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTS

Author:   B.M.M. Kortekaas
Abstract:
There are two main causes of price-differences between horticultural holdings, namely a difference in the moment of selling and a difference in quality of the offered product. The subject of this study is the relation between quality and price as it manifests itself at the Dutch auctions. Spray carnations are the product in investigation. The effect of crop-age, produce-origin and maturity on ornamental value and vase-life has been analysed. Besides attention has been paid to the ralation between price on the one side and day of the supply, characteristics of the lots and inspection remarks on the other side.

Crop-age and produce-origin, especially between Israeli and Dutch produce, had no influence on ornamental value and vase-life. The maturity of spray carnations had a positive effect on ornamental value. Vase-life of immature and too mature offered produce is shorter.

The price-differences between lots of spray carnations over a 5-week auction-period are mainly caused by differences in day of supply. Auction-sequence per day, weight of the bunch and inspection remarks influence the price too.
