EXPORT OF HORTICULTURAL PRODUCE FROM KENYA

Author:   Lucy W. Wanjao
Abstract:
Over the last several years Kenya has steadily increased her production of, and share of the world market for fresh fruits, vegetables and cutflowers. Horticultural produce from Kenya to Europe and Middle East countries increased from 3,000 tons in 1970 to nearly 22,500 tons in 1980, earning the country about K£ 0.3 million (Kenya pounds) and K£ 11.4 million, respectively. This represents a substantial earning to the country and makes horticultural exports one of the important foreign exchange earners.

The main importing countries for Kenyan fresh horticultural produce in 1980 were United Kingdom (49.1%), West Germany (19.1%), France (10.5%). Belgium (5.7%) and Switzerland (3.8%).

Tropical fruits exported from Kenya include pineapples, mangoes, and avocados and had an export volume of 3,846 tons in 1980, earning K£ 1.08 million. The main off-season vegetables exported to those countries are French beans, courgettes and capsicums. French beans had a total volume of 4,964 tons in 1980, earning K£ 2.5 million. Vegetables of Asian origin which are mainly exported to United Kingdom, had an approximate export volume of 5,500 tons, earning K£ 1.6 million. Cutflowers including carnations, roses, Alstroemeria, Molucella and Statice exported in 1980 reached a quantity of 3,788 tons and earned K£ 4.9 million.
