DIFFENRECES IN YIELD AND RETURNS, PROBLEM BETWEEN ECONOMY AND GROWING TECHNIQUE

Author:   E. van Rijssel
Abstract:
Dutch flower holdings are mainly specialised in one crop. The profitability of holdings specialised in the same crop is varying a lot, especially in returns per m2 glasshouse. In a project comparing nearly 40 glasshouse compartments with one variety of roses, research was performed on how to optimise returns.

A detailed documentation showed a lot of relations between firm characteristics and returns. With factor analyses 16 aspects were selected which influenced the returns. Some soil characteristics had a contrariant effect in one season form another and a zero effect over the year. Some grower- and plant characteristics had an effect in one or two seasons and other grower and firm characteristics had an effect all over the year and influenced returns strongly.

The results confirmed the idea of a minor relation between costs and returns. The relation between production and quality was weak, most aspects found, just influenced one of them.
