THE ECONOMICS OF BLACK CURRANT PRODUCTION IN POLAND

Author:   E. Makosz
Abstract:
Area of black currant plantations increased in Poland from 4 700 ha in 1961 to 18 000 ha in 1982, and yield increased from 20 000 to 59 600 tons respectively. Hand labour input oscillated from 2 100 to 2 420 hours/ha /Tab. 1/ however it is only 1 580 hours in modern plantations. The production costs of 1 kg of black currants was 41,1 zlotys when the yield was 6 t/ha. When the yield increased to 10 t/ha the production costs decreased to 28,6 zl/kg /Tab.2/. Net income in such a production was 144 000 zlotys at the yield 6 t/ha and 364 000 zl respectively /at price 65 zl/kg/. The costs of establishing new black currant plantation was lower then ones for other fruits /Tab. 3/. But, apple production was more profitable than black currant /Tab. 4/ although raspberry have got the highesr price per 1 kg /Fig. 1/. An interest in growing black currant in small farms is decreasing while rentability of wheat and potato production increased.
