THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND DAYLENGTH ON GROWTH AND FLOWER YIELD OF ANIGOZANTHOS MANGLESII (HAEMODORACEAE)

Abstract:
Anigozanthos seedlings respond to watering and fertilizing when the night temperatures drop to 12–15°C. At higher temperatures regular watering and fertilizing caused death of seedlings. Cold treatment (17 hrs at 10°C for 4 months) of seedling prior to planting, stimulated growth and flower yield. Temperatures below 10°C caused flower induction; higher temperatures reduced the flower yield. High temperatures after flower induction stimulated evocation of flowers. Lighting the plants at night (4 hrs - from 22:00 to 02:00 pm) did not affect flower yield when grown at relatively low temperatures, however, it reduced the yield when grown in a heated greenhouse. Flower height is directly proportional to leaf length in the fan from which the flower is produced (flower stalk length was approximately 1.7 times the length of the leaves).
