ABSCISIC ACID-REGULATED PROTEOLYSIS AND NITROGEN RECYCLING IN APPLE SHOOT BARK

Author:   D.M.A. Mousdale
Abstract:
Proteins are the major form of stored nitrogen in shoot bark of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.). This reserve nitrogen is mobilized during spring regrowth. Premature hydrolysis is prevented by the suppression of proteolytic enzymes during the autumn by abscisic acid (ABA). High ABA concentrations in the bark decline during the winter to reach minimal levels by the following spring. The manipulation of nitrogen levels in shoot bark by application of growth regulators is discussed.
