THE EFFECTS OF FRESH AND COMPOSTED BARK ADDED TO SOIL ON THE ACTION OF SOME SOIL FUMIGANTS

Authors:   C. Slusarski, J. Skierkowski
Abstract:
Some methylisothiocyanateous fumigants, namely, Dazomet, potassium N-hydroxymethyl-N-methyldithiocarbamate and MIT + DD, when introduced into bark substrates or soil-bark mixtures, lengthened their phytotoxicity by 10 – 14 days than in mineral soil. The phytotoxic after-effect of all fumigants tested was longer in composted than in fresh bark. The fungicidal activity of methyl bromide was considerably decreased when the bark content in the soil exceeded 50 %. With increased bark content, higher inorganic bromide residues after methyl bromide fumigation were found in the soils. In greenhouse experiments, bromide residues in tomato fruits from plants grown in soils containing 12.5 or 50% of bark and treated with methyl bromide were not significantly higher than in the case of soil without bark.
