Abstract:
A peat-vermiculite (50/50 v/v) potting medium was amended with 0, 25 and 33 percent lignite by volumn to determine if lignite could be used as a major media component for the culture of several greenhouse crops.
Lignite amended media did not alter the growth parameters of Pelargonium at 25 and 33 percent lignite. Philodendron grew comparable to controls at 25 percent lignite but at 33 percent growth was reduced and leaves exhibited some phytotoxicity. Ficus, Ardisia, Euphorbia and Chrysanthemum plants responded poorly to lignite amended media and leaf phototoxicity was observed on plants with reduced growth.
Observation on leaf phototoxicity on Chrysanthemum and Philodendron was not related to excess leaf minor element content.
