CONDITIONED LINES FOR EARLINESS IN CARAWAY (CARUM CARVI, L)

Author:   A.S. El-Ballal
Abstract:
Intense culture of the high essential oil yielder type of caraway (1.4.36) was ceased in starved environment at the roset stage. High urea applications on dense culture had resulted in four successive flowering groups, which were isolated through transplantations, temporally. According to days to first bloom they were classified; very early (VE), early (E), median early (ME) and median (M) and had relative frequencies of 1: 2 : 1 : 6, respectively. The percentages viability of the flowering competitors were 30.96, 16.69, 24.27 and 1.61 while their fertility percentages were 82.39, 72.31, 85.11 and 76.19%, respectively. Selection response in days to full maturity showed a realized again of 13 to 7 days for (VE) and (E) groups with a genetic advance of 27.48% per generation in fruit yield as correlation response. Physiological homeostasis had revealed apparent compensation in essential oil yield for the early competitors.
