TIME-DEPENDENT VARIATIONS IN THE ALKALOID PRODUCTION OF AMSONIA AND RHAZYA SPECIES

Authors:   I. Máthé Jr, Á. Vadász, T. Keve, I. Máthé Sen, Á. Máthé
Abstract:
The indole alkaloid tabersonine may be the starting material of certain medicines with cerebrodilatory effect. The seeds of Amsonia Tabernaemontana Walt., A. angustifolia Ait., A. illustris Woodson and Rhazya orientalis A.DC. contain tabersonine in similar quantity. In Hungary the shoot, fruit /follicle/ and within it the seed of A. angustifolia and A. illustris showed the tendency of higher production than A. Tabernaemontana and Rhazya orientalis. Consequently, the tabersonine production of the first two species is also expectedly higher, than that of the others.
