ISHS Acta Horticulturae 131: In Vitro Culture, XXI IHC

PROPAGATION OF APPLE CULTIVARS

Authors:   P. Fiorino, A.R. Leva
Abstract:
In vitro shoots production can be stimulated in the three apple cultivars ("Golden Delicious", "Yellowspur" and "Starkspur Golden"), both normal and spur, by means of an adequate choice of basal medium and of growth regulators. In this trial PM resulted to be the substrate with the highest proliferation coefficient, while BAP appears to be the most active cytokinin.

Although all cultivars give analogue responses, a different intrinsic potentiality exists. Thus "Starkspur Golden" shows proliferation coefficients that are significantly lower than those of the other two cultivars.

The rooting tests pointed out that the method of explants basal end dipping for 1 hr. in an IBA solution at 2.10-3mol before putting into culture in the basal medium deprived of growth regulators usually gives better results (rooting percentage and material quality), if compared with the auxin (15.10-6 mol) addition to the substrata itself.

Even from this point of view, "Starkspur Golden" is the cultivar that gives the poorest response to the treatment.

Survival after transplanting is satisfying for "Golden Delicious", reduced in "Yellow spur" and nil in "Starkspur Golden".
