Abstract:
Some Gesneriaceae are capable of forming very high numbers of adventitious shoots from the epidermis of small organ fragments cultivated in vitro.
Generally, single epidermal cells give rise to shoots from which complete plants can be easily recovered.
This system thus provides favourable preconditions for the induction and vitro selection of mutants.
Comparative studies on the effects of chemical mutagens led to efficient procedures for mutant induction in organ fragments of Saintpaulia, Streptocarpus, and Kohleria.
First experiments on the in vitro selection for low-temperature tolerance in Saintpaulia and for compact growth habit in Kohleria are reported.
