Abstract:
A method was developed for control of both leaf curl disease and Xanthomonas begoniae in Begonia 'Elatior' mother plants.
On leaf pieces, placed on a nutrient medium in vitro, growing points develop, which are excised, and placed on a nutrient medium suitable for growth of X. begoniae. Meristems that do not show any sign of bacterial growth are transferred to a medium suitable for plant growth, until plantlets obtained can be transferred to soil.
After selection on the basis of horticultural properties the selected plants are used as mother plants for further propagation.
The results so far obtained with seven cultivars are encouraging.
