Abstract:
In vitro culture of strawberry anthers (2n=8x=56)yielded plants with varied ploidy.
Among the 85 plants examined for the chromosome number, 34 were diploids (2n=2x=14), 33 tetraploids (2n=4x=28), one was hexaploid (2n=6x=42) and 17 were mixoploids.
All the individuals exhibited the characters of the species, and even partly of the variety.
Thus, individuals containing only two genoms are able to function.
Most of the plants (81) were capable of flowering and fruting (56 in 1981 and 79 in 1982). The criteria of pollen size and viability and seed germination capacity made possible to distinguish the individuals which should give viable progeny with uniform ploidy.
This would give a chance of genetical investigations at a di- and tetraploid level of plants with characters of the species F. x ananassa.
