Abstract:
Results so far obtained by an asparagus breeding program based on in vitro androgenesis for the synthesis of all-male F1 hybrids, are reported.
More than 20 different genotypes were used as anther donors.
From nearly 132 000 anthers cultured in the period 1976–1981, 880 (6.7%) androgenetic clones were obtained.
The androgenetic response is clearly influenced by genotype and growth conditions of the anther donor plant.
Among the 434 androgenetic clones tested for ploidy level the frequency of haploids, diploids, triploids, tetraploids was 2.5%, 68.8%, 6.4% and 22.3% respectively.
A wide variability in fern and spear traits was observed at each ploidy level.
The F1 progeny test revealed that 4% of diploid male clones came from anther somatic cells.
The best all-male hybrids tested appear to be superior to the cv.
Early of Argenteuil and to equal the best foreign controls.
